Must-Do Things When Your Family Visits Chambana Last weekend, both of my brothers decided to visit the U of I. Were identical triplets, and rarely spent time apart from each other before collegeâ€"needless to say, I was extremely excited. Since Im from the other side of the world, my brothers Jefferson (a History major at the University of Wisconsinâ€"Madison) and Hamilton (a Film major at Vanderbilt University) were the first faces from home Id seen in a long time. I wanted to make the most out of this weekend and ensure that my brothers would have a blast, too. Unfortunately, the weather wasnt great, so we didnt get the opportunity to get any good photos of us three. Nonetheless, we still did a lot of thingsâ€"you can do them too, when your family visits! Visit iconic locations on campus. Our campus is home to gorgeous pieces of architecture and wonderful bits of sceneryâ€"show them off! Here are the places I took my brothers to see: 1. Alma Mater Jefferson, one of my brothers, posing with Alma. One of our first stops was Almaâ€"its probably the most iconic statue on campus, and I wanted my brothers to see it. If your family visits on a special occasion, Alma could even be dressed up! 2. Altgeld Hall Image Credit: Illinois MakerLab. Home to the Department of Mathematics, Altgeld is my hands-down favorite building on campus. If youre lucky, you might even hear the bells play a familiar tune! 3. Japan House Image Credit: Japan House Gardens. Although its a little far, the Japan House and its gardens are absolutely gorgeous. I didnt go there with my brothers, but would definitely recommend it if youre just looking for a place to walk around with your family! Eat at one of the great restaurants in Champaign. There are endless possibilities if you want to find a good place to eat, but my personal favorite is The Hub. Image Credit: The Hub Champaign. The Hub is a new restaurant and bar on First and Green, and my favorite place to go for brunch. They offer great deals on food, especially when theres a Bears or Illini game on. The Hub is usually pretty quiet on weekends, but can get pretty packed on special occasions like Dads Weekend. I took both my brothers here on their last dayâ€"we had a great meal and watched the first half of the Bears game before saying our goodbyes. Go to a sports game! Image Credit: The Champaign Room. If theres a game on, head over to Memorial Stadium or State Farm Center! Jefferson, a student at Wisconsin, was still sore about our homecoming victory, so we didnt talk about going to see a football game. Nonetheless, watching our Illini play is a great way to spend the day with your family. Illinois has a gorgeous campus, with tons of really cool stuff to do. My brothers both had a great time when they visited, and told me later they were really sad to leave. I enjoyed bringing them around Champaign tooâ€"walking around with them made me really proud of my school. Im going up to Madison to visit Jeff the weekend before Thanksgivingâ€"I know Ill have a great time, but Im sure their campus isnt as nice as ours! Franklin Class of 2022 I grew up in Hong Kong, China, and I’ve come across the world to Illinois to major in Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I’ve always thought outer space is super cool, and I love that I’m learning everything that I can about it at Illinois.

It had nothing to do with that wretched girl’s suicide†. By Mr Birling using the word â€Å"wretched† about Eva Smith, It is clear that he’s unconcerned about the fact that a woman has died, and would just like to forget the whole thing. As it was performed in 1945 the majority of the audience would have had socialist views and so they would have not been able to show much sympathy towards him. Another character which the audience would find hard to sympathise with us Mrs Birling. She is a cold and uncaring woman. After being married to Mr Birling for so long, she has gradually lost her own character and has now succumbed to just agreeing with whatever Mr Birling says. Her role in Eva Smith’s death was turning Eva down when she went to the charitable committee for help. She also makes it clear that she does not really care about her death, and if anything she blames the girl herself â€Å"girls of that class† meaning that she thinks she’s worthless in this world and that she’s a waste of space. She’s also very disingenuous; we know this because she says, â€Å"Though naturally I don’t know anything about this girl†. She clearly does though, by her denial to accept playing a part in her death and the siding up to her husband the audience also find it hard to feel sympathy towards her.

Litotes Litotes Litotes By Maeve Maddox A rhetorical term for understatement is litotes: litotes [LY-tuh-teez] (noun): understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by the negative of the contrary (as in â€Å"Hes not a bad ballplayer†)- Merriam-Webster. Litotes can be used to express a variety of meanings. When the translators of the KJV have Paul of Tarsus identify himself to the Roman officer as â€Å"a citizen of no mean city† (Acts 21:39), it is not to suggest that Paul was being modest. The words are â€Å"no mean city,† but the meaning is â€Å"a very important city.† Here are other examples of the use of litotes to emphasize the importance of something by using a negative to express the contrary: The history of American freedom is,  in no small measure, the history of procedure.  (i.e., â€Å"to a great extent†) The disparity in government funding is  not easy  to remedy. (i.e, â€Å"extremely difficult†) Litotes is also used to convey modesty, sarcasm, contempt, admiration, and veiled disapproval, as in the following examples: You’ve managed to wreck the car and destroy the front porch all in one go. Nitrogen Triiodide Chemistry Demonstration In this spectacular chemistry demonstration, crystals of iodine are reacted with concentrated ammonia to precipitate nitrogen triiodide (NI3). The NI3 is then filtered out. When dry, the compound is so unstable that the slightest contact causes it to decompose into nitrogen gas and iodine vapor, producing a very loud snap and a cloud of purple iodine vapor. Difficulty: Easy Time Required: Minutes Materials Only a few materials are required for this project. Solid iodine and a concentrated ammonia solution are the two key ingredients. The other materials are used to set up and execute the demonstration. up to 1 g iodine (do not use more)concentrated aqueous ammonia (0.880 S.G.)filter paper or paper towelring stand (optional)feather attached to a long stick How To Perform the Nitrogen Triiodide Demo The first step is to prepare the NI3. One method is to simply pour up to a gram of iodine crystals into a a small volume of concentrated aqueous ammonia, allow the contents to sit for 5 minutes, then pour the liquid over a filter paper to collect the NI3, which will be a dark brown/black solid. However, if you grind the pre-weighed iodine with a mortar/pestle beforehand a larger surface area will be available for the iodine to react with the ammonia, giving a significantly larger yield.The reaction for producing the nitrogen triiodide from iodine and ammonia is:3I2 NH3 → NI3 3HIYou want to avoid handling the NI3 at all, so my recommendation would be to set up the demonstration in advance of pouring off the ammonia. Traditionally, the demonstration uses a ring stand on which a wet filter paper with NI3 is placed with a second filter paper of damp NI3 sitting above the first. The force of the decomposition reaction on one paper will cause decomposition to occur on the other pa per as well. For optimal safety, set up the ring stand with filter paper and pour the reacted solution over the paper where the demonstration is to occur. A fume hood is the preferred location. The demonstration location should be free of traffic and vibrations. The decomposition is touch-sensitive and will be activated by the slightest vibration.To activate the decomposition, tickle the dry NI3 solid with a feather attached to a long stick. A meter stick is a good choice (dont use anything shorter). Tips and Safety Caution: This demonstration should only be performed by an instructor, using proper safety precautions. Wet NI3 is more stable than the dry compound, but still should be handled with care. Iodine will stain clothing and surfaces purple or orange. The stain can be removed using a sodium thiosulfate solution. Eye and ear protection are recommended. Iodine is a respiratory and eye irritant; the decomposition reaction is loud.NI3 in the ammonia is very stable and can be transported, if the demonstration is to be performed at a remote location.How it works: NI3 is highly unstable because of the size difference between the nitrogen and iodine atoms. There is not enough room around the central nitrogen to keep the iodine atoms stable. The bonds between the nuclei are under stress and therefore weakened. The outside electrons of the iodine atoms are forced into close proximity, which increases the instability of the molecule.The amount of energy released upon detonating NI3 exceeds that requ ired to form the compound, which is the definition of a high yield explosive.
